Search and Rescue Dog Training – The Essential Beginners’ Guide
When given the proper training, paired with natural instincts and abilities, dogs are capable of nearly any job a human handler can imagine. Whether it is herding cattle or hunting for bears and other large game, dogs have an uncanny way of excelling in the different tasks handed to them by their owners. Perhaps the most important of canine careers is that of hero, or search and rescue dog.
Search and rescue dogs are often the first line of defense to be dispatched when a natural disaster occurs, or any other catastrophe that requires people to be located quickly and effectively. For those whose interest is peaked by the thought of training themselves and their dog for a life of search and rescue, here is a good beginners’ guide describing what that life entails.
In the world of search and rescue dogs, there are a couple of different options when it comes to the dogs themselves. The first is the use of dogs that can use the dead skin cells lost by humans to help locate them. Also known as air scent dogs, these search and rescue dogs are able to detect the scent of a human by using those skin cells that float in the air. Air scent dogs are especially helpful in large-scale search and rescue missions, but are only effective if they are downwind from the scent cone given off by the person or persons they are searching for.

After all humans vacate the area for a short period of time to allow for their scents to clear, the air scent dog works a back and forth pattern until they are able to hone in on the origin of the scent. Air scent dogs’ noses are so accurate, they are oftentimes able to locate people in the exact spot they are trapped, helping rescue teams to execute quicker extractions.
