Dog Training – 4 Leash Walking Tips

Did you know that one of the biggest problems for dog owners is leash walking? Every week I get a call from someone complaining about the way their dog pulls.

It can actually be dangerous for you to walk your dog if he is a really bad puller. I’ve seen people dragged down and hurt by how hard their dog pulls.

I’m going to share with you here some valuable tips on leash walking. Here they are:

Tip #1: Never try to walk a dog that has been cooped up all day.

If your dog has been lying around waiting for you, let him burn off some of his energy before you take him for a walk. Throw a ball, play tug-o-war, or do something to calm him down before the walk.

Tip #2: Use a gentle leader.

One of the best collars on the market is the gentle leader head collar. It works by controlling your dog’s head. When you control the head you can control the body, much the same as a horse bridle is used. They really are great collars.

Tip #3: Teach him where you want him to be.

Your dog does not know that he is supposed to be walking on your side. Spend some time using a lure. Put a little piece of food in your left hand and hold it close to your dog’s nose. Have him follow the lure; reward him every five or six feet. As he gets better, go for longer and longer periods.

Tip #4: Don’t let your dog’s opposition reflex kick in.

When you apply pressure, your dog will resist with counter-pressure. If you pull back on the leash, he will resist and pull harder…opposition reflex.

The secret to leash walking is always keeping the leash loose. Don’t allow the leash to become tight.

So, having problems crate training your Dog? Don’t worry. With a few simple tips, you can be back on the right track in no time! Crate training can be a great way to give your dog a place of his/her "own". A place to escape to, a place to just hang out, or a place where they can rest comfortably and feel like they are in a familiar environment.

However, this does not mean you won’t encounter problems. So, here are a few tips that can maybe help you head off the major problems before they come up. First off it is easier, as it is with any kind of training, if you start while your dog is a puppy. If your dog is not a puppy, however, one thing you can do is to take the top off of the crate to start with. Sometimes, an adult dog can feel "closed in", and removing the top of the crate can help them get accustomed to their new space without them feeling so confined. Simply leave it off for a month or two, then put it back on. Your dog should be so familiar with it, they won’t even care.

Remember to furnish the crate. Make sure there is warm, dry bedding. A blanket or towel is best. Make sure your dog has clean water all the time, and if your dog is going to be confined for more than two hours, maybe attach a hamster-type water dispenser with ice water to the door. Toys and treats are good to include, make sure there is nothing your dog could choke on, and make sure the treats are something that will last awhile.

Another thing to remember is to NEVER use the crate as an object of punishment. The crate should be your dog’s "happy place". Not a place they associate with punishment or unpleasantness.Dog crate training problems

Dog Training Tips That Work Best For Smart Dogs

Just because some dogs are hard to train doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with them. Contrary to what most people believe, these dogs are not in any way stupid. In fact, these dogs might even possess quite a high level of intelligence – high enough to let them get what they want when they want it!

Aside from independence and dominance, there are some other traits that might get in the way of your dog training efforts. A dog with a high level of intelligence and determination may also be hard to train. Here are the reasons why:

Smart Dogs Are Hard To Train Intelligence, not stupidity, makes dog training quite a difficult task. Why? This is because most of the hard-to-train breeds are natural born hunters and fighters. They must rely heavily on their brain power in order to survive.

These dogs might be too intelligent for our own good. They can easily see through us – they know our moods and know just how far they can push us around. Intelligent dogs can easily manipulate things and even us owners to get just what they want. You can tell whether your dog is a genius if he or she displays these characteristics:

.Intelligent dogs find a lot of new ways to get into trouble

.They quickly find an exit even when presented with a see-through barrier such as a chain-link fence

.They have the ability to understand your words quickly

.They respond to your commands based on their evaluation of your moods

A Dogged Determination Can Also Hinder Your Dog Training Efforts

Determined dogs can be difficult to train especially when they have already set their hearts and minds on something. Once this happens, say goodbye to your dog training efforts for the meantime – you would find it quite difficult to divert your dog’s attention to the exercises anyway!

How would your know that you have a determined dog? Here are some signs that will tell you whether your dog has this trait:

.Your dog’s attention might be temporarily diverted by a special treat such as a toy or a cookie but once he or she is through with it, the dog will return to fulfilling his or her original goal. Whether it might be digging flower beds or anything that might be buried underground, munching on your sofa or chewing cords, you can count on your determined dog to get what it wants and have it his/her own way no matter how long it may take!

.Your dog shows a marked obsessive behavior and ignores physical correction.

If your dog shows any of these traits, training can be difficult but not at all impossible to accomplish. You just need to know what attitudes and exercises work with them best. For example, in working with intelligent dogs, be sure to include a lot of variations in your dog training sessions. Also include activities that will stimulate your dog’s brain. You should devise new ways of hiding toys and following trails to encourage the animal to use much of his or her brain power and keep his/her interest in your dog training sessions.

For determined dogs, however, you should do just the opposite. These animals get the most from their dog training exercises if there are fewer variations and more repetitions of the same routines. Showing that you are having fun during your dog training sessions may likewise do determined dogs a lot of good!

Dog Training Clubs Tips – A Guide to Learning How to Choose the …

Whether you’re new to dog training clubs or have some past experience, learning how to choose the best clubs requires some time to perfect. However, if you keep these steps in mind, you’d be sure to choose the best club in your area that trains dogs.

Search by Location

Since you’ll be dropping off your pooch, you might want to narrow your options to those clubs that are near you. After all, having a howling dog in the back seat of your car can be a very stressful experience. That’s why, the closer the dog training club is, the better for both you and your dog. You can ask your veterinarian for clubs he or she would recommend that train dogs. Your friends who have their own dogs can also be great resources for learning about the best dog training clubs in your area. At the most, you must only limit your choices to only those clubs that are registered nationally. Since the national bodies such as The Kennel Club often have a screening process before they award dog training clubs their memberships, you can avoid all those run-of-the-mill dog training clubs.

Interview the Trainer Personally

Once you have chosen a dog training club, don’t hesitate to contact them and speak with the dog trainer personally. You can ask about his or her years of experience training dogs, especially the breed of your dog. You may even discuss with the dog trainer any obedience problems you have with your dog and ask how he or she will approach handling your dog.

Watch a Training Session

Another way to choose from the clubs available is to request that you watch a training session yourself so that you can see how the dog trainer works with the dogs in his or her class. Observe how the dog trainer and his or her assistants interact with dogs. How many dogs are trained per session in these dog training clubs? A good number for a dog training class is 10 to 15 dogs. Anything more than that may be hard to manage, even for experienced trainers. You can also check the cleanliness of the facilities to make sure that you don’t expose your dog to diseases.

Choosing the best fit out of all the clubs in your area requires your personal attention. You need to know that you’re entrusting your dog to the best club you can find. In the end, choosing the best one will pay off when you come home to an obedient and highly trained dog. Thanks to these types of clubs, you don’t have to do all the work yourself.

Dog Training School – Teaching the "Sit" Command

Complex dog training is based on a foundation of the successful carrying-out of simple commands. A search and rescue dog does not begin with searching and rescuing, and a well-trained gun dog does not instigate his education with quartering a field and retrieving shot birds. Before a dog can carry out these more difficult tasks they must establish a rapport with their coach and develop a sense of self-belief in their ability to complete the job they are asked to do.

Dog training school begins with fundamental obedience commands; ‘come’, ’sit’ and ’stay’. This lesson is on the second I teach a pup, ’sit’.

By now he comes when called and in learning that command the pup has accomplished two things. First, he’s learned that he can learn; sounds simple, perhaps even redundant, but before learning to come when called he had no concept of "learning". It’s important that he comprehends this notion because he’ll likely be doing a lot more of it!

Second, he’s learned the value of pleasing you, his master. You’ll notice that in my dog training school there is minimal use of "treats". Food is for nourishing the body; praise nourishes the soul. Watch your dog’s reaction to being fed. He’ll wag his tail and pant enthusiastically, then dive head first into his kibble. But give him lavish praise and generous petting and he’ll nearly pass out from all his delight. Nothing, and I mean nothing, please a dog more than knowing he’s pleased the most important being in his life.

Teaching the "Sit!" Command

Successfully teaching the ’sit’ command gives you control over your dog. There is much she does not, and will not, appreciate about the world around her and it is your duty to fend on her behalf. Your family and friends do not wish to be in the company of an unruly dog; when she sniffs, licks and runs helter-skelter in their presence tell her to ’sit’.

When walking your dog and then stopping, you do not want her wrapping her lead around your legs; command her to ’sit’.

Call your dog to you and tell him to ’sit’; you now have his attention and are ready to continue with today’s lesson.

Okay, hopefully I’ve established that teaching your dog to sit on command is worth your time and effort. Here are several ways to make it happen.

The easiest technique simply involves paying attention. Your dog does a lot of sitting on his own; when you see him beginning to park his rump on the ground say "Sit!" Not "sit down" or "take a seat" or anything else fancy; just "Sit!" (As I’ve mentioned before it is okay to say the dog’s name first, i.e. "Gracie, sit!") Go to your dog and be liberal with the praise.

The second technique is usually taught by using a treat but works as well without. Stand in front of your dog (who is also standing at this point) and hold you open-palmed hand in front of her nose. As she begins sniffing it move your hand up and back over her head. She’ll raise her head and hopefully begin to lower her butt; as she begins to sit give her the command; "Sit!" If necessary, gently push her rump toward the ground.

The third technique is a variation on the second and the one I use most often. With your dog standing, move to his side, put one hand under his chin and the other on his back right in front of his tail. Support his head and push his rump toward the ground while commanding "Sit!" You may also support the head with your dog’s collar and leash. Lavish with praise, pause and repeat. Do these exercises only for a few minutes and always end the lesson on a successful ’sit’.

Bonus!

Here’s a bonus for you that only the bigshots teach. Once your dog comprehends sitting on command (and that should happen rather quickly) introduce a hand signal. When you command "Sit!" show your dog your open palm like you were a cop stopping traffic or Superman stopping a speeding bullet. In no time at all Gracie will hit the deck with the hand signal alone and you will become the envy of all the dog owners in your neighborhood.

Happy training to you! See ya’ in the next Dog Training School lesson and please; spay or neuter your dog!

Basic Dog Agility Training – Get Your Dog Started on Agility Training

Agility training in dogs can provide the challenge and exercise that your dog needs. You can start conditioning your young pup to do agility training by taking him on regular walks when he reaches the age of four months. As your puppy matures, you can turn his walks into longer ones and even encourage him to run or chase Frisbees. It may all start as a game or a form of exercise, but as your dog’s agility training progresses, you will see how your dog will benefit with a stronger, leaner body as well as a more developed behavior.

As you train your pup for agility, make sure that you practice some precautions especially for very young dogs. Don’t try to make your young puppy jump too high as its forelegs may not be properly developed yet. He may easily be injured if he lands on the wrong side. Make sure that you conduct his training gradually so that he can develop strong muscles through time.

Agility competitions may include different phases such as getting on the balance beam, jumping and climbing obstacles. These obstacles can build up your dog’s confidence once he successfully passes each one.

Your dog may start out scared, so it is your duty to motivate him to try each obstacle. Do it in a way that your dog will not feel pressured, but instead in a way that will also be enjoyable for him.

Since you do not use a leash nor a collar on your dog during these trainings, your dog must learn to obey your commands to successfully negotiate each obstacle. Practice will condition your dog to hear your voice and respond as you expect him to.

Almost any dog, big or small, and of any breed can try dog agility training and excel. Your dog will enjoy the challenge that agility training provides. At the same time, you will also benefit from the opportunity to bond with your dog as you guide him in mastering the skills needed to overcome each hurdle. Once he masters the skills for agility training, he will stay in better shape and will live longer.

All it takes is your determination and patience to train your dog to go through each challenge and succeed.

How to Select a Good Online Dog Training Course

Like most of us who are trained from the very early phase of our lives first by our parents, then by our teachers and mentors on how to lead a disciplined life, how to socialize, how to behave, etc. etc. Even the best friend of man .i.e. our dog or the puppy or by whatsoever lovely name we call your pooch, requires some sought of training in order to understand his master’s command very easily and thus do not harass their master’s with their behavioral problems.

One thing that will amuse most of the dog owners is that no longer they need to run to places to get their dog trained by a good dog trainer. There are several online dog training courses available that you can purchase to train your pooch at your home. These online dog training courses not only provide some vital tips on how to train your dog at home but they also help in saving a lot of your money from going to the hands of the professional dog trainers, who ask for a hefty sum to train your dog at your place. And even if you don’t have time to train your dog at home, any of your family members can do this task just by following the tips offered by these online dog training courses.

Now the first thing that comes in the mind of most of the dog owners is how to select a good online course to train their dogs at home. Amongst the several online dog training courses that are available, choose from the one that is run by a professional dog trainer. This is because; a professional dog trainer will more likely reveal the actual dog training methods that will work. So just look out for the course run by the experts in this field and beware of some crafty websites that lure you with great offers.

The next very important thing to look out for when selecting a good online training course for your dog is the course which focuses first on the master’s training. This is very important because in order to train your dog, you first need to be well acquainted with the procedure of dog training. The other important thing to take into consideration while selecting a good online dog training course is, the course which lay emphasis on the behavior pattern of dogs. Just like men, the dog too has a behavior pattern of its own and is very unlike the behavior pattern of human beings. So a course, which teaches the master on how to tackle with the behavior and thinking pattern of his dog, is always considered to be a very good one.

The last but the most important thing concerned with the good training course is the price that it comes for. It is not always that a course that comes for a higher price will have something extra to offer, some really good dog training courses are available for very less price. In this regard, all you need to is to look out for various websites run by the professional dog trainers, compare their courses and then choose from the one that offers the best training at a minimum price.

Even you can train your dog just like any other professional dog trainer by purchasing a good online dog training course.

A Guide To Dog Training Guides On The Internet

Dog training guides available on the internet unfortunately fall into the "anyone with half a brain can write a guide" category of information products. This is unfortunate because it means that the few really good ones tend to be lumped together with the poor ones and the whole lot is written off as not worth considering.

That would be a big mistake for any dog owner wishing to train their pet dog themselves without enlisting the services of a professional dog trainer.

So what are the advantages of these dog training guides for the "go it alone" dog trainer?

Firstly there are the practicalities of not having to make sure you and your dog make it to the appointments on time. While putting regular time aside for the training is obviously crucial, if you do it yourself then an hour or two late every now and then is not a major catastrophe.

Secondly, by not relying on somebody else’s physical presence during the training sessions, you are more likely to develop your own style of training. This in turn will strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Thirdly, having written and sometimes, audio and video material, at your disposal you can go over various aspects of the course again and again at your leisure.

Fourthly, one of the major pluses for buying a dog training guide off the internet is that you can easily and quickly shop around and see what the various courses offer.

Finally, if the courses are sold through a reputable site like Clickbank, then you have a cast iron money back guarantee in place that if you dont like the course, you can return it for a full refund within 8 weeks of purchase.

Dog traiing guides bought over the internet can provide a real, value for money, alternative for anyone wishing to train a dog. Choose carefully and the whole exercise can be hugely
beneficial to both you and your dog.

Crate, Kennel and Potty Training a Dog or Puppy

Considering getting a puppy? Having trouble training a puppy where to potty? Tired of coming home and having your things chewed up? You need a dog crate.

Crates are used by trainers, groomers, veterinarians, and sitters. If you ever leave and board your dog, they will be using a crate.

We have had four dogs in our home. I have used crates with three of them and will forever more!! I was in the mind frame that a crate was cruel; I quickly learned that that was not at all the case. It has turned out to be more like a playpen for our pups. I used a playpen to keep my daughter safe and to give her a place to nap; a crating is the same concept. I have been pleasantly surprised with each dog we used it with. My house can get a little crazy. I only have one child, but we always have neighbor kids, friends, and church family members over to our home. The Cavaliers tend to go nap in their crates (all by themselves) when our house gets loud and crazy.

Dogs by nature look for dens to sleep in and have their puppies in. Mother dogs teach their puppies not to go potty in the area they sleep. This is an instinct. Have you ever noticed your puppy sleeping under a piece of furniture?

Reason to use a crate:

Keeps puppy safe when no on can supervise them

Keeps puppy from chewing on your property

Safe place for dog to rest

House training

Travel

Types of crates:

There are many types of crates on the market. Plastic, metal, and wire tend to be the most popular. I prefer the wire crates. I like the fact that the wire crate is open on top and the sides for ventilation and are easy to clean. The crate folds down for easy storage and transportation.

Size of Crates:

Dog Crates come in many different sizes. The height and length of your adult dog will determine what size kennel to purchase. Your dog should be able to stand up, without hitting it’s head on the top, turn around, and lie down stretched out to the full length of its body without being cramped. Most wire crates come with a divider. This allows you to make the crate smaller when the dog is a puppy and larger as the puppy grows. You will only need to purchase one crate instead of different sized crates as the puppy grows.

What to put into the crate:

Make the crate inviting. Put in the crate a washable pad, blanket, or a pillow. Put items in the crate that is puppy safe. Just remember, the items will more thank likely be chewed on by the puppy. Never put food or water into the crate.

Placement of the crate:

The placement of the crate varies depending on the purpose of the crate. I keep our Cavalier’s crate in the bedroom. The purpose of the crate in our home is for sleeping, holding the dog while we are away from home or are unable to supervise, and a quiet place for them to retreat to. Other dog owners will put the crate in the room where the family spends most of their time.

How to introduce your dog to a crate:

1. Make the crate comfortable and appealing

2. Put treat/toy in the crate

3. Sit by the crate with the door open

4. Let the dog wonder in and out of the crate, find the treat, and play with the toy

5. Do not force the pup into the crate when you are introducing it

6. After about 20 minutes, put the dog in and close the door

7. Stay by the crate, put your fingers in and praise the dog, letting him know that everything is ok

8. Let out after a few minutes unless whining

9. Never let the dog out if he is whining

10. Do not make a big deal out of letting the dog out of the kennel

11. Put puppy into the crate while napping, leaving the door open

12. Make it clear to all family members that when the pup goes into the crate by himself to leave him alone. The crate is HIS domain for privacy and relaxation.

Crating during the night:

Allow the puppy to go potty

Play with the puppy to wear him out

Expect whining for the first few nights. It is a new experience.

Put the crate close to your bed.

Put your fingers in the crate so the puppy knows you are there

Usually if he whines for more than 10 minutes, I will take him outside to potty, bringing him back and returning him to his crate. Do not play with or cuddle him.

Whining issues:

The pup is going to whine. He likes to be with you. Before leaving the pup in the crate for more than a few minutes, allow the pup to empty his bladder and bowels. Exercise the pup until he is worn out will cut down on whining. Never yell at the dog or hit the kennel. I never let the dog out of the kennel when he is whining. Always wait until he stops.

Amount of time a puppy can spend in a crate before needing to go potty:

2-4 months – 2-3 hours

5-6 months – 4 hours

6-12 months – 5-6 hours

12 months plus – max of 8 hours

Crates are not to be used as prisons. They can be easily abused. But if used properly, crates are a great asset to you and your puppy!
