Training Scotland Terrier Puppies – The Right Mindset You Need to …
Scotland Terriers, also known as Scotties, are small but distinguished dogs. They have a tendency to be playful yet dignified and stubborn yet charming. Originally bred as hunting dogs, Scotland Terriers are protective, enthusiastic dogs who do better around older children and adults who can firmly establish their role of dominance.
As with other small dogs, when training a Scotland Terrier it is important to establish the role of pack leader in a firm, but gentle manner. Scotties respond well to confident, but non-aggressive tones. They also need to be exercised daily with long walks. Scotland Terriers can make fine companions for owners who are confident, but gentle with them.
Here are some tips to help you understand the mind set that you need to be in to start training your Scotland Terrier:
Gaining an animal’s admiration and confidence is the initial phase towards effectively training him. Setting this basis is enormously important when schooling a dog. As collective pack animals, they have a innate need to respect a solid leader.
In a dog’s world, if you are the leader, then he will logically understand what you instruct him to do. Until your dog has learned to rely on and obey you, it will be tough for any instruction course to be successful. Loyalty is something that you wordlessly call for through repeated, constant and fair interaction with your dog. When your dog genuinely respects you, he understands that his duty is to stick to your guidance, and he will want to do it naturally.
In a dog’s world, love and friendliness are not the same as respect and confidence. While a new puppy just wishes to be snuggled, make sure that you do not offer love to your puppy at an inappropriate time. It is also critical to not permit the puppy or dog to get away with whatever it wants to. It is to your puppy’s greatest advantage to have limits, rules and expected behavior.
By having expected rules and punishment for breaking the rules you are mimicking pack behavior. Since dogs are pack animals, they naturally react happily to this setting.
Good luck training your new Scotland Terrier puppy!
