Dog Behavior Training – Doggy Do’s and Don’ts
Training a dog to do what you want it to do is not an easy task, but it is an important one if you want your dog to behave well with both people and other dogs. There are a lot of different dog behavior training techniques that are used, some more effective and prevalent than others. One of the biggest challenges in training a dog is getting it to go against its basic instincts when it comes to things like doing its business and eating the right things. In this article, we’ll take a look at a couple popular training techniques that are widely used, and how you can implement them to make your dog friendly, healthy, and happy.
Dog behavior training can take a number of forms, but one of the most popular methods is also the most simple. You can use positive and negative reinforcement to let your dog know what is good and bad, and repeatedly reinforcing certain actions is a great way to get your dog doing the right thing. This can be accompanied by things such as treats for when your dog has done something exceptionally good, or when you are trying to teach it to respond to verbal commands. In other cases, simply praising the dog and patting it will do just fine, or if your dog has done something you don’t like, a quick scolding will let it know.
There are also other ways to get more precise dog behavior training done, such as dog training clickers. A clicker is a small mechanical device that makes a clicking sound when squeezed, and is used to let the dog know that it has done something right. The sound should be accompanied by a treat, so that the dog builds a positive association with the clicker. The training is more precise because verbal praise can sometimes come too late or be incorrectly interpreted by the dog, but a clicker is quick and always makes the same noise.
Regardless of the methods you use during dog behavior training, your ultimate goal should be to get your dog to interact well with other dogs and people, and to encourage good behavior while discouraging bad behavior. There are lots of tools at your disposal, and it is ultimately up to you how you will use them, but the most important tool you have is always your patience and level head.
